Empowering MoneyLion Nation with a new partnership
Today, we’re pleased to announce exciting upgrades to the way we design and manage our customers’ MoneyLion investment accounts. To bring you premium investment advice and products, we’ve partnered with Wilshire Associates Inc. (“Wilshire”), a global investment advisory firm that specializes in customizing solutions to meet the investment needs of their clients.
For over 30 years, Wilshire has been advising some of the nation’s largest institutional investors, and advises on more than $1 trillion in assets for various clients around the country. Now they’re sharing this expertise with MoneyLion, and we’ll leverage their recommendations to provide you with advice, help you invest, and empower all of MoneyLion Nation. 🦁
As a result of this partnership, we’ve made several enhancements to:
- Fine-tune our personalized asset allocation portfolios and use a wider set of asset classes to give you added diversification
- Identify exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that are the right fit for our portfolios by leveraging Wilshire’s established research process
- Optimize the rebalancing process to help reduce trading and tax implications

Okay, now let’s get into more details of what’s new and improved.
Asset allocation from the biggest players to you
Wilshire helps level the playing field for individual investors by providing us with additional tools to share with our MoneyLion members, including some of the same insights that it provides to institutional clients and the same internal resources it uses to manage its largest clients. The result is a series of five asset allocation portfolios specifically designed for MoneyLion members.
As our Lionomics financial literacy program recently explained, asset allocation is the process of dividing investments across different types of assets, such as equity (stocks) and fixed income (bonds). Over time, strategic asset allocation is the most important driver of the total return (investment gains) and risk of any broadly diversified portfolio.
How you allocate your investments is one of the most important decisions you make, and our process takes care of asset allocation for you. New MoneyLion members will encounter an updated onboarding process when they open an investment account in the MoneyLion app. The revised onboarding and portfolio assignment process will help us recommend an asset allocation portfolio aligned to your personal investment preferences and risk comfort level.
New strategic asset allocation portfolios
Each of the five new asset allocation portfolios offers a distinct balance of associated risk and return expectations that we will rebalance to help you maintain your asset allocation over time.
We’ve also broadened the asset classes used in these portfolios. In terms of equities, we’ve added US Large Cap, US Small/Mid Cap, Developed Market International Equity, and Emerging Market asset classes. From a bonds perspective, we’re now allocating to municipal bond ETFs (both short term and intermediate term) to help make members’ portfolios even more tax efficient.
Here are the five core portfolios, each based on a preferred level of risk:
Conservative portfolio: Seeks to protect your portfolio by weighting heavily to fixed income (bond) ETFs, with a smaller proportional allocation to equity (stock) ETFs, offering liquidity and targeting stability but offering lower potential returns.
Moderately conservative portfolio: Seeks to protect your portfolio by weighting more heavily to fixed income ETFs while also seeking to achieve some growth by adding some weighting to equity ETFs.
Moderate portfolio: Seeks to achieve growth and reduce risk by weighting to fixed income ETFs and equity ETFs fairly evenly, but with a slight tilt toward equities. It may experience some volatility (but most likely still less than the volatility of the overall market) in pursuit of long-term growth.
Moderately aggressive portfolio: Takes on higher risk to seek higher potential long-term returns and is typically weighted more heavily to equity ETFs, but with some weighting to fixed income ETFs to help cushion against volatility.
Aggressive portfolio: Takes on substantial risk in an attempt to maximize returns and is heavily weighted to equity ETFs, with a small (typically 20% or less) weighting in fixed income ETFs, and may endure extensive volatility in pursuit of higher long-term gains.
Investment selection: How we choose the right ETFs
ETFs allow investors to access baskets of multiple securities in a simple, convenient, low-cost way, making them ideal investment options for many types of investors. But picking the right ones can feel like a full-time job. Not to worry, MoneyLion members can leave that part to MoneyLion and Wilshire.
Wilshire searches and monitors the entire universe of over 2,000 ETFs, selecting only those that are well priced, highly liquid, efficiently traded, well established, and with track records that closely replicating the returns of their benchmarks.
The five asset class portfolios comprise different weightings of asset classes and are implemented with carefully selected ETFs based on your risk preference. When you invest money, we will buy ETF shares (or fractions of shares) on your behalf, and you can view your portfolio of investments any time in the MoneyLion app.
