Michael G. on sharing financial know-how with his community

By

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re interviewing some Latinx members of the MoneyLion team. Meet Michael G., a writer in our San Francisco office.

What is your cultural background? ????

My family is Mexican-American from the Rio Grande Valley area of Texas. Some members of my family (including my grandparents) worked in agriculture and moved to Michigan to find work. That’s where I was raised. I moved to Houston, TX, when I finished college and lived there for 10 years. Texas has my heart. Shout out to my Michigan/Texas fam!

How did your heritage shape who you are today? ?

I believe that my heritage has shaped who I am in many ways. I have seen firsthand how a small family can migrate across the country without much in search of opportunities and build something great. This lesson has taught me perseverance and determination in the face of adversity.

What makes you proud to be Latinx? ?

I am proud to be Latinx because of the significance we put into family. I currently live very far from family and, despite the distance, we continue to remain close. I cherish the time I can spend with them and look forward to it around the holidays. Loud and crazy Latinx families are the best.

What are your favorite Latinx meal, song, and artist? ??

My favorite Latinx meal is enchiladas suizas. The sauce is green and made with tomatillos. So good! My Favorite song is Rayando el Sol by Maná, which is also one of my all-time favorite artists.

What is your role at MoneyLion, and how does your Latinx heritage affect your work? ✍️

I am a Copywriter and Content Strategist at MoneyLion. I create written content that speaks directly to our audience through our blog and other social platforms.

Growing up I saw many individuals who didn’t have access to the tools or resources to become financially successful. I established my career in financial services because I wanted to educate Latinxs and other minorities about finances. Knowledge is power, and my goal is to provide that power to the Latinx community. This is why I am so proud to be a part of a company like MoneyLion that makes it so easy for first-time savers to reach their goals.

What advice do you have to others in the Latinx community pursuing their goals too? ?‍♂️

For others in the Latinx community who aspire to achieve their goals, I would say it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Nothing great was achieved overnight. Focus on doing your best every day, and one day you’ll look back to realize you have achieved what you once thought was impossible.

It’s important to take pride in your Latinx heritage and support your community!
